Richmond

The owners of this 1903 farmhouse didn’t want to lose the character of the original building. And they wanted a property that could serve the family for another 115 years or so. In the case of this house, the 115-year-old basement foundation wasn’t beefy enough to go the distance. The basement was carefully excavated to create a new concrete foundation. The original concrete slab was removed. The new slab floor was lowered to gain more headroom for a basement ADU. The spaces of the main floor were relocated to create better flow and gain a larger kitchen. Then, an entirely new second floor was added to the house.

As a bonus, and thanks to a lot of sweat equity from the clients, we were able to incorporate salvaged wood from the original structure into the design of the interior details.
