1894 House
In 1894 houses were built by hand, basements were dug out by hand, and in 1894 it took many talented craftspeople to create the trimmings and details of a Victorian era house. The same holds true today to an extent. Well, the same holds especially true when the owner of an 1894 house is an architectural historian and designer with an impeccable eye for period detail, who also has an impressive collection of antique house parts. Those house parts needed a home. Furthermore (as it turns out), even period purists want an Accessory Dwelling Unit. Working closely with the owner, we designed a basement ADU and reimagined the kitchen. The house was lifted, a new foundation poured and we created a spacious basement ADU. The main floor received a kitchen addition that expands the kitchen area and includes a dining nook. To top it off, after many years of ‘z-brick’ cladding on the exterior, the siding was restored to fit the splendor of its original era.
